Is there a way of adding a statement in red when people attempt to submit a link and it hasn't gone through? ie when they don't fill in the "spa" spam filter there's no warning that their link has not been submitted.

Could you post a link? I have a message that says "Incorrect verification code". What version of the plugin are you using?

Same problem here. If the user do not fill any required filed, there is no warning.
See by yourself adding a series of blank fields here.

It also didn't fix the subcategory issue where only 3 subcategories show on the main page even though there are more.

The 3 subcategories is a standard among all directories. You can increase the number in the plugin Settings panel. If you upgraded it, just deactivate it and reactivate it.

Version 3.2.4 now has a "wrong verification code" message on Add Link page.
